Word Ways topical index: Letter-play
Ross Eckler, 2002
The following index attempts to classify various kinds of letterplay that have appeared in Word Ways. Be warned that any classification is idiosyncratic; it may be necessary to search a bit to find the topic in which one is interested. However, some clue where to look may be afforded by the list of major index headings:
Properties of words (lengths, letter-statistics, etc.)
Properties of letters (symmetries, ascenders-descenders, vowels-consonants, etc.)
Letter patterns in words (palindromes, etc.)
Distributions of letters in words (pair isograms like HAPPENCHANCE,
pyramid words like SLEEVELESS, SETTEE)
Letter fragments in words (bigrams, most identical letters in word, etc.)
Words inside words (charades, alternades, interlocks)
Restricted letter choices (lipograms, typewriter words, word dice)
Word geometry (word graphs, eodermdromes, word worms)
Alphabetically ordered letters in words; pangrams
Word scoring (gematria) A=1, B=2, ... Z=26
Insertions, deletions, substitutions (word ladders, word networks)
Transposals, transdeletions, substitute-letter transposals
Structured word groups (word squares, partially overlapping words, etc.)
List compression
Number names
Special word sets (presidents, states, chemical elements, etc.)Most relevant material has been included, but brief follow-ups of an article in Colloquy in the next issue or two of Word Ways are in general omitted. References are of the form xx-yyy, consisting of the last two digits of the year followed by the page. This index covers issues of Word Ways through February of 2002.
